 Hanging up wallpaper

Cut and apply adhesive

Cut the lengths of the wallpaper to the height of the wall adding 10cm for trimming. Be aware of possible pattern match. Prepare the adhesive according to the instructions and apply adhesive in an appropriate quantity. Start from the middle of the length and apply the adhesive towards the edges with a wallpaper brush. When the entire length has been covered, it should be folded up as shown on illustration 1.

Apply adhesive on 3-4 lengths at a time and let every length soak for 5-10 minutes before hanging (on certain types of foam paper the adhesive should soak for 15 minutes).

Hang the wallpaper
Hang the first length following a plombline, so that the length is hung completely vertical.
Place the length on top of the wall, push it carefully in place and adjust it. Are you in doubt whether the ceiling is completely straight you may push the wallpaper 1-2 cm further up and afterwards cut or tear off the paper till even edge. Smooth the length with a paperhanger's brush – from the middle downwards and towards the edges. Press the length to the wall at the skirtings and cut or tear off the surplus wallpaper with a wide filling knife.

Hang the second length next to the first one. Be aware of possible pattern match. The best result is obtained by pressing the edges against each other, i.e. edge-to-edge and without overlapping.

Door and socket outlet
Around socket outlets, doors, and windows you should cut the wallpaper as shown on illustration 2. Make sure that the wallpaper is tight to corners and edges, and cut with a pair of scissors or trim with a wallpaper cutter.

Painted walls
Wash the wall thoroughly with water added detergent according to the instructions. If you have very smooth alkyd or oil painted walls, you should sand them afterwards with a coarse abrasive paper and prime with suitable primer undercoat to make sure that the wallpaper sticks well to the wall.

Papered walls
You should only hang wallpaper on top of old wallpaper if this sticks well to the wall. You may check whether it sticks, if you apply some glue to the wallpaper. If cockles appear, it does not stick well enough and should be removed. It should also be removed if it is very uneven or if there are many layers on top of each other.

You can remove old wallpaper in several different ways:

With a steam wallpaper remover you can take off even the most difficult wallpaper.
NB: Do not use any wallpaper softener before or in the evaporator, as this may create poisonous gasses.

With wallpaper softener which you dissolve in water and apply to the old wallpaper, until this is evenly wet. Leave the softener until you can scrape off the paper with a wide filling knife without  difficulties.

With cellulose paste that in a rich mix is applied on the wallpaper. Cover with thin plastic film and leave it for approx. 24 hours, after which it is easy to scrape off the wallpaper. Make a small test on beforehand.

When the old wallpaper has been removed, you must sand the wall with abrasive paper or scrape with a wide filling knife, until the surface is smooth. Finally, dust off the wall with a broom to remove all loose grains.

Scrape out cracks and holes and moist them with some water on a brush. Fill with a suitable interior filler. When the surface is dry, you should sand the repairs smooth with abrasive paper.
